| FAQ |
- How did you come up with the name definitive REHAB & pain
management?
The name illuminates our mission, which is to provide definitive diagnoses and treatment plans to our patients so that they may achieve maximal function and appropriate pain relief.
- Aren't all rehabilitation and pain management clinics the same?
No. Rehab and pain management clinics vary greatly with regard to the training and experience of their staff and the quality of their facility.
- What's different about definitive REHAB & pain
management?
definitive REHAB is
owned and directed by a physiatrist,
a medical doctor who specializes in
physical medicine and rehabilitation
(PM&R). She is board certified
in PM&R
and has over 20 years of medical training
and experience. Our team also includes
a licensed physical therapist with
a masters degree and other well trained
and experienced professionals. In
addition, our office is comfortable,
well-equipped, and aesthetically pleasing.
It is the training and experience
of our staff and definitive REHAB’s investment
in our facility that make the definitive
difference.
How
does the definitive REHAB difference
impact my care?
There are two ways to treat pain: the shotgun
approach and the definitive REHAB approach.
Under the shotgun approach, health care
providers treat general areas about which
patients complain, e.g., the lower back.
This sometimes works, but can also be harmful. Patients
can be treated for months, even years, following
this approach with no functional improvement
or pain relief and even have their conditions
worsen because the wrong area is being treated.
We strive to provide definitive diagnoses
and treatments plans so that patients may
achieve maximal function and appropriate pain
relief.
- I've never heard of the PM&R specialty. What is it?
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) is a medical specialty concerned with diagnosis and treatment of patients with painful or functionally limiting conditions, the management of coexisting diseases and co-impairments, diagnostic and therapeutic injection procedures, electrodiagnostic medicine, and emphasis on prevention of complications of disability from secondary conditions.
PM&R specialists are referred to as physiatrists. Physiatrists are trained in the rehabilitation of neurologic disorders, the diagnosis and management of impairments of the musculoskeletal (including sports and occupational aspects) and other organ systems, and the long-term management of patients with disabling conditions. Moreover, physiatrists provide leadership to multidisciplinary teams concerned with maximal restoration or development of physical, psychological, social, occupational, and vocational functions of patients.
- Do I need a referral from my primary care provider?
No. A
broad range of medical specialists refer to definitive Rehab,
including internists, family practitioners,
neurologists, anesthesiologists, and spine,
orthopedic, and hand surgeons. However,
a referral is not required unless the patient
is insured by an HMO. And, even when required
our office is usually able to obtain the referral
for the patient from his/her primary care
physician.
